Dj Gemini has been on
the club scene even before working the noon day mix with Jeanie
Jones on WKYS. He has an amazing technique when spinning on the
ones and twos. Gemini is also a big fan of CRED Magazine (which
is always a good thing). I got a chance to sit down with Dj
Gemini to see how he made he way into the game.
CRED: Let me begin by asking
you what age you started?
DJ GEMINI: I started
djn at about age 13
CRED: 13 is pretty
young to dj. Can you remember one of the first parties?
DJ GEMINI: I think my first
party may have been a wedding reception that I did for this
couple when I was about 14 or 15 years old.
CRED: Was the crowd
feelin’ you?
DJ GEMINI: I don’t even
think I had their wedding song. Hey you shouldn’t let a 14 yr
old dj your wedding reception!
CRED: I have no clue
what that couple was thinking lol. You’ve come a long way since
then though. What are some of your accomplishments?
DJ GEMINI: Well I’ve
done a lot, just for the last few years though, I represented
the east coast in the Toyota DJ showcase in Chicago, Right now I
am the only dj in the DMV with 2 mix show’s on the same day.
Check them out on 93.9 WKYS 12Pm with Jeannie Jones also 12AM
with Déjà Perez, and nominated most supportive dj in the DMV
EMA’s, City Paper mixtape of the year with Mullyman just to name
a few. Should I keep going lol?
CRED: Nope I think
you’ve listed enough lol. There are many artists in the DMV. Can
you inform them on how to submit there demos to 93.9 WKYS?
DJ GEMINI: We have a few
outlets to submit music to radio, the best way to submit your
music is to set up a meeting with myself, I do meetings with
independent artist weekly. Just call the station and they will
set the meeting up.
CRED: That’s a good
look. As a mainstream dj you know that music today is all over
the place. Give me you thought on today’s indie music?
DJ GEMINI: I think there is a
lot of talent
out there. There is even more
garbage out there though. It’s too easy for anyone to make a
song. People think that just because they have a computer, and
pro-tools that they can be a rapper. That just makes it hard for
the good stuff to make it thru. Shout out to all of the indie
artists doing their thing though, the DMV is next up!!
CRED: I agree. We definitely
have a lot of talent here in the DMV area. You are now part of
the WKYS family. How did you get hooked up with WKYS?
DJ GEMINI: I’ve always
been djn in clubs in the DMV pretty much before I was even on
the radio. So I‘ve been good friends with all of the dj’s on the
radio, I was just never on the radio. I sent a few CD’s in to
WKYS and WPGC 95.5 a few years ago but nothing really happened
so I really didn’t force the issue. One day my manager called me
and told me go give DJ Sixth Sense a call, at the time he was
mix show coordinator of WKYS. He told me to start bringing CD’s
in to give to the program directors. As time would go by, I
would go to the studio and hang out with DJ Alazay, Analyze, and
try to learn as much as I could. I did that for about a year,
and a spot opened up. Here I am.
CRED: That’s what’s up. Let
the CRED readers know where they can party with you at?
DJ GEMINI: Well on
Thursday nights K Street Lounge, Friday nights at Ibiza, and
Saturday night at Lux Lounge
CRED: Now I know you do mix
tapes. Let the people know which ones you mixed so they can go
out and cop them.
DJ GEMINI: I have a few
different mixtape series. Dirty Radio (dirty south series), On
Ya Radio (all the hits), I Love the 90’s (all 90’s r&b), Uptown
Saturday night (old school r&b), Sex Education (slow jam
series), Wire Mix Volume 3 (coming soon with myself, Mullyman
and Dj Celo), and a lot more to come its too many to name.
CRED: Give the people who
want to walk in your shoes a word of advice?
DJ GEMINI: Listen to
other dj’s. Whether you think they are wack or they are good.
You can always learn something from another dj. Shout Out to the
DMV, my family, Major League, WKYS and everyone who supports me.
Thank you so much! I got more to come !
